The lesson of the broken bowl

You might have heard the metaphor about how we are all these beautiful bowls when we start out. That over time things happen in our lives and we get cracked and broken and we have this opportunity to not shy away from the broken parts but to heal and make those broken parts even better and stronger.

You may even seen filling those cracks with gold (kintsugi) so they’re so beautiful and the now the bowl’s even cooler. That is all 100% true.

However, if you are doing some program that is asking you too much information about your broken places when you are just trying to put it together, like the bowl I made in a class on loss and repair, it could be too soon.

I had just made my bowl and picked it up to tell someone about it and I broke the bowl ALL OVER AGAIN!

If you try to share your broken parts too soon, they may re-break.

So don’t give that kind of information just because a program or app is asking you a question. And if you are a program or app maker, do not ask those kinds of questions without absolutely giving choice. I don’t think you should be asking those questions for most programs in the first place.

So let’s be very gentle with our broken places while we are becoming gorgeous and wise.
