Victories of the spirit

One of the most important kinds of accomplishment my mom taught me came from her experience working as a drug and alcohol counselor in the drug court.

She saw many people’s lives ravaged by addiction and she helped them find new ways to find their way out.

Sometimes that didn’t work, but sometimes it did.

When those wins happened, she had a special name for them.

She called them victories of the spirit.

I love that name, victories of the spirit. It captures perfectly what that feels like when you’re in a hard time and you do something extraordinary for the situation you’re in.

Often those are much more important than the big shiny victories.

Victories of the spirit are worth celebrating.
